New Water Resources Management Program

Dakota outcrop

The Dakota aquifer is the first aquifer to be studied by the Iowa Geological and Water Survey under the auspices of the new Water Resources Management program. The geologic and hydrologic evaluations concentrate on the lower part of the Dakota Aquifer, while the water quality evaluation focuses on the entire Dakota Aquifer. As more wells are completed in the aquifers of Iowa, and additional stratigraphic, construction, and water-quality data are interpreted and entered into our databases, our knowledge of these valuable resources will improve and our evaluation of them will be refined. "MODFLOW" MODELS FOR DOWNLOAD --- NEW ---

Groundwater flow within the Cambrian-Ordovician and Lower Dakota aquifers were modeled using Visual MODFLOW version 2009.1. In order to run the models on a local PC, compressed (.zip) files were created and placed on the Iowa DNR's FTP website for public consumption. Before downloading a compressed (.zip) file, please open the associated "README" file (.txt) to learn more about the selected model. To access these files, click on the link below:

Exploring the Midcontinent Rift

The Midcontinent Rift is a failed rift, a great rip through the earth's crust stretching for a thousand miles and crossing the center of Iowa. Organic-rich lake sediments are potential petroleum source rocks and overlying coarse clastics may serve as reservoir rocks.
