The IGWS Oakdale Facility is housed in a blue steel building on the west edge of the University of Iowa Research Park on Old Farmstead Road. The 10,800 sq. ft. building serves as a center for geologic research and houses the Iowa Geological Survey's Rock Library (the repository for drill core and chip samples, as well as samples collected from exposures throughout Iowa). The facility includes stations for core logging, processing and microscopic study of drill samples and production of striplogs, laboratories for the processing of water samples, microfossils, and stations for the entry of data into the Iowa Geological Survey's GEOSAM data base. Additionally, it is used for equipment maintenance and storage, fabrication of equipment, and for publication and file storage. A small conference room is also in the building. Visitors to the Oakdale Facility- Oakdale serves as the principal office site for several IGWS staff, but due to funding cuts, staff members are not always onsite or available to assist visitors. Any person wanting to visit and utilize the Oakdale facility must prearrange their visit with IGWS to ensure that a staff member will be available to assist. Any person desiring access to core, chips or associated files for study or sampling purposes should secure advance permission from IGWS staff, and make arrangements with IGWS staff for such sampling. Sampling must adhere to established IGWS sampling policy. Faciltiy operating hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
